The exact mechanism of how Chinese ginseng works is not completely understood. Animal and human studies have function of the adrenal glands. These are sometimes called stress glands because they produce stress hormones that enable the body to respond to stress, danger, or threats.

Panax ginseng has a balancing effect on the stress hormones, and it improves the cells ability to "burn" oxygen as fuel, thus improving energy production and enhancing physical performance. In addition, it helps muscle utilize glycogen, which is the "stored" form of blood-sugar or glucose.

A group of compounds known as ginsenosides are thought to be responsible for many of the therapeutic effects of Chinese ginseng. The ginsenosides Rg1 and Rb1 have been most intensively studies. Rg1 has been shown to stimulate brain and central nervous system activity, allowing increased  energy and improved intellectual performance. Rb1 has been shown to relax brain activity and lower blood pressure. So, these two constituents represent both sides of the "adaptogenic" properties of Asian ginseng.

Today, ginseng is commonly recommended for fatigue, immune enhancement, improved mental alertness, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. It also serves as a sexual tonic, an athletic-performance enhancer, and a "soother" that helps fight stress. Holistic doctors also recommend it to lower high cholesterol, provide support for the immune system if someone is undergoing chemotherapy and radiation, and for the control of anxiety and depression.
